Ginger Snap Bliss Balls

Homemade nourishing treats and a cuppa.  It’s hard to beat.

It’s also a little harder to come by these days I must say.

If I’m not rocking and ‘boobing’ my little one to sleep, I’m running around doing errands, trying to keep the dirty clothes pile from reaching the ceiling (whilst equally trying to tackle the clean clothes pile), and cleaning up the kitchen which seems to be a never ending mess…

But that’s my life now and despite the organised chaos (with only one child?!) I couldn’t be happier.  This is everything we ever wanted.  Our baby girl is our world and as hard as some days can be, sometimes even a little lonely, I have to remind myself it is just a season.  Motherhood is something I prayed for and I’m so thankful for the opportunity every day.  Even if those days are just FLYING past.

It’s crazy to think we have a baby that has been on the outside almost as long as she was on the inside.  Seriously.  Crazy.  I know it’s SO cliched, but she’s just growing so fast!  It’s hard to cherish the moments sometimes when you are in the throws of ridiculous sleep patterns as well.

And there’s that word again, sleep.  It’s so hard not to talk about it as a parent I think.  I’m trying not to let it consume me but it’s funny (strange) how it quickly becomes the centre of your world when you aren’t getting any!  And sometimes all you want is that assurance you’re not doing anything wrong…that you’re not the only one going through it.  Even though you know that’s really not possible.

What I have realised through it all though is just how incredible the body is in being able to adapt and function with so little zzzz’s.  How I’m able to operate a moving vehicle is a little scary to think about on some days  Anyway, I digress.  It’s a topic that gets a lot of air time already on hundreds of blogs, social media and forums that I don’t want to bore you with.  But what I do want to mention is just how much I’ve learnt the importance of not forcing it and not reading too much into it.

So if you’re a new mama (or papa), hang in there.  You…we…are doing a great job at raising these tiny humans!  It’s a tough gig.  But I’m slowly trusting that baby will sleep when baby wants to sleep.  As much as I yearn for at least 5hrs straight of sweet sleep, I know this too shall pass and that the cliched time passing will mean bub will no longer need me before I know it.  So embrace it I will.

Anyway, back to the balls!

Yes, as hard as it can be sometimes, I believe whole heartedly in being able to prioritise healthy meals and treats that nourish the body.  This means getting in the kitchen, letting it get messy, and using whole foods to cook with love.  Foods as close to nature as possible so as to maximise on nutrient value of course.

The good news is these gems are super simple to make for anyone who’s time poor.  They’re also full of healthy fats from the nuts, no refined sugar, flour (wheat) or gluten and vegan friendly.  Also my current fave, which I whipped up sort of by accident using what I had available at the time.

As I said, so so easy to make (as most bliss balls are) and so so so addictive!  I challenge you not to eat the mix as you go rolling these bad boys.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups cashews

  • 3/4 cup gluten free, non GMO rolled oats

  • 1/4 cup activated buckwheat (aka buckinis)

  • 1/4 cup almond meal (you can use almonds instead, but just ensure you blitz them before everything else so you aren’t left with chunks of almond in the balls)

  • 12-14 pitted medjool dates (soaked for a minute in boiling water to help soften if not already gooey)

  • 2 tsp coconut oil

  • 3-4 drops doTERRA’s ginger essential oil or 1 Tbs ground ginger

  • 1 Tbs water

Method

  1. Blitz cashews, oats and buckinis in a food processor until they resemble a crumbly flour

  2. Add almond meal and dates, then process together for a minute or so

  3. Add coconut oil and ginger and continue processing until mixture starts to come together

  4. Add water while processing to help soften the mixture a bit if need be.  You want it to be soft but still have some crumble.

  5. Once the mixture starts to form a clump, stop processing and use a teaspoon to spoon out the mixture into even amounts and roll into balls.

Make your favourite cuppa and enjoy!
